1. Research fields (discipline development)

Developing small modular pressurized water reactors, focusing on key technologies such as integrated arrangement, self-stabilization, full-power natural circulation cooling, new type of control rod hydraulic driven device, passive residual heat removal, etc., reflecting the characteristics of a new generation of advanced reactors. Major research fields:

(1) Overall technology research of small modular pressurized water reactors. Research and demonstration of overall objectives and technical parameters of related national major projects; research of overall technical plans and nuclear safety analysis; research of key technologies.

(2) Pressurized water reactor fuel research. Research on water reactor fuel design and new fuel; research on design technology of low-temperature reactor fuel assembly; research on ATF fuel technology, key fuel materials and structural performance.

(3) Research on the main system technology of pressurized water reactors, including the research on the main heat transfer system and nuclear auxiliary systems, the research on the thermal hydraulic characteristics of reactors, and the research on the structural analysis of key equipments in reactors.

2. Research projects

Research projects undertaken mainly include several national major projects, the NHR200-II heating reactor research project, several NSFC projects, etc.

3. Laboratory and facilities

Laboratories for low-temperature nuclear heating reactors and relevant supporting laboratories. The 5MW low-temperature nuclear heating reactor is an integrated natural circulation shell type light water nuclear reactor, located in the Changping scientific research base of the INET. Its thermal power is 5000 kW. The reactor is equipped with 13 control rods and has 3 thermal circuits. The reactor has 21 main systems and 35 subsystems, including 319 process equipment, 132 electrical equipment, and more than a thousand pieces of various valves and instruments. In addition, there are laboratories for power generation and refrigeration. The power generation laboratory is equipped with a 200 kW wet steam turbine generator, and the refrigeration laboratory is equipped with a 200,000 kcal lithium bromide absorption refrigerator. Research on the operating characteristics of the heating reactor, research on cogeneration, research on low-temperature refrigeration of nuclear energy, and research on seawater desalination by nuclear energy have been carried out on this reactor.
