Division of Nuclear Technology and Application

1、Research area

Built in 1961, the division is focused  for the secondary-level “Nuclear Technology and Application” affiliated to the first-level discipline “Nuclear Science and Technology”. At the beginning, this division mainly took the task of radiation shielding experiment for reactors; afterwards, this division researched on reactor detector, radiation meters and so on, which were for national key engineering. Ever since the Reform and Opening, this division started research and development on civil nuclear technology by taking the lead in civil radiation detection technology, non-destruction detection and other research, and gained fruitful research achievement and tremendous economic benefit. Among the achievements, the project “Large-scale container inspection research” gained support from the national Ministry of Science and Technology through the eighth, ninth and tenth five-year plans; and this project successfully developed the first “container inspection system using accelerator”, and further the first “container inspection system using cobalt-60”, both reaching international leading level.

At present, main research field of this subject includes: (1) Nuclear detector technology: research and develop various types of high-performance ionization chamber detector for nuclear measuring systems; (2) Radiography inspection technology: research and develop radiography inspection systems for security check, nuclear security and other areas; (3) X ray/gamma ray nondestructive detection technology: research on industrial DR/CT nondestructive detection and neutron photography; (4) Industrial nuclear measurement and control technology: research on nuclear measurement and control gauge and large-scale nuclear measurement and control system; (5) Reactor radiation measurement technology: research on neutron measuring system and radiation monitor systems in and out of a reactor.

2、Research projects

At present, the on-going projects are supported by National Science and Technology Major Project, Nuclear Energy Development Science and Technology Project, National Natural Science Foundation, Essence Project of CNNC Advancement and Innovation and so on. 

(1) Research on Localization Technology of High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor Nuclear Measurement System: Development of Engineering Prototype Equipment for High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor Nuclear Measurement System (National Science and Technology Major Project)

(2) Research on Vehicle Inspection Technology for Nuclear Facility Access Control (Nuclear Energy Development Science and Technology Project)

(3) Research on Ionic Acoustic Method for Verification of Range Uncertainty in Proton Radiotherapy (National Natural Science Foundation)

(4) Design and Development of Graphite/Carbon Component Volume Detection Equipment (supported by an enterprise)

(5) Study on the Time Response Characteristics of Linear Small Pixel Array Gas Ionization Chamber Detectors (Essence Project of CNNC Advancement and Innovation)

3、Lab and instruments

Division of Nuclear Technology Application has three labs.

(1) Beijing Key Laboratory of Nuclear Detecting Technology

This lab was mainly used to perform radiation shielding experiment for reactors and research on detectors and radiation measuring meters. The world’s first cobalt-60 container inspection system, which was developed in this lab, has been applied in the Customs for over 20 years. This lab was entitled a Beijing Key Laboratory of Nuclear Detecting Technology in 2012, researching on ray nondestructive detection, industrial nuclear measurement and control, wherein advanced technology and devices comprise high-resolution DR/CT inspection system, DR/CT radiography inspection system for scanning large-scale object, online crown gauge and so on.

(2)Joint research center of Tsinghua University and Beijing Hualixing Science and Technology Development Limited Liability Company

This lab was established in 2015 as a joint research center of Tsinghua University and HLX, and the main research is on large-scale object radiography inspection technology. The first national dual-projection cobalt-60 container inspection system for nuclear facility access was ever successfully developed in this lab; a pebble stream inspection system for high-temperature gas-cooled reactor was also developed in this lab, which was supported by a National Science and Technology Major Project.

(3)Nuclear detector and electronics research and manufacture lab

This lab focuses on nuclear detection technology research, nuclear detector development and supporting electronics system etc. There is a complete gas ionization chamber research and manufacture production line, with various supporting devices and equipment for detection machining, manufacturing, detection and so on, including several isotope radiation sources, several types of X ray generator and high-frequency digital oscilloscope.
