1、Research fields (discipline development)

The New Materials Division (301 branch) of the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology at Tsinghua University was established in 1964, with more than 50 faculty members. Its main research field is the national key discipline "Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Materials", and it carries out research and development work on nuclear fuel, nuclear materials, and new materials, as well as graduate training in related fields systematically. It has complete qualifications for radioactive operations, physical protection systems, and quality assurance systems, and is one of the few research units in China that can carry out nuclear fuel teaching and experiments with real uranium. We have undertaken graduate courses such as Advanced Nuclear Fuel and Materials and Performance Analysis of Nuclear Fuel and Materials.

Focusing on the production technology and irradiation performance of spherical fuel elements, a key core technology of the fourth-generation advanced nuclear energy system high-temperature gas cooled reactor, in-depth and persistent basic research and development of manufacturing processes, equipment, and testing technologies have been carried out. The research results obtained are at the world's leading level, and the relevant research results strongly support the construction of the North China Nuclear Fuel Element Production Line of CNNC. We have formed distinctive disciplinary advantages in the research and development of spherical fuel elements, construction of production lines for spherical fuel elements, research and development of advanced nuclear fuels and materials, research on post irradiation performance of nuclear fuels and materials, and research on the first end of spherical spent fuel reprocessing.

Relying on multiple national major scientific and technological research projects, we have formed a large-scale comprehensive advanced research and development platform with advanced functions and complete supporting facilities, including experimental research, numerical simulation, pilot production, cold state and irradiation performance characterization measurement. We have a professional and complete talent team.

3、Laboratory and facilities

The New Materials Division of INET is a core unit of the "Advanced Nuclear Energy Technology Collaborative Development Center" of the Ministry of Education. It has been engaged in advanced nuclear fuel design, preparation, and pre - and post irradiation performance evaluation research for a long time, and has a Class A radioactive operation qualification. It has four independent experimental buildings and multiple experimental sites at the Changping Experimental Base of Tsinghua University. It has a complete production line for spherical nuclear fuel element preparation, a hot chamber platform for post irradiation research of nuclear fuel and nuclear materials, and a complete radioactive material characterization analysis and testing platform, including more than 100 sets of equipment and instruments.

The research laboratory has established China's first dedicated hot chamber for analyzing spent fuel in high-temperature gas cooled reactors, including 5 concrete hot chambers, 2 lead chambers, 6 shielded glove boxes, etc. A batch of equipment has been developed for studying the performance of spherical fuel elements in high-temperature gas cooled reactors after irradiation. It can comprehensively conduct heating experiments on spherical spent fuel under reactor operating conditions and simulated reactor accident conditions, as well as corrosion experiments on simulated reactor inlet and outlet accidents.

The fuel element preparation production line includes complete sol gel particle preparation system, fluidized bed chemical vapor deposition particle coating system, spherical fuel element pressing system and physical and chemical performance analysis system; Large scale instruments and equipment include sintering technology research platforms such as atmospheric sintering furnaces, hot pressing sintering furnaces, and discharge plasma sintering furnaces, as well as material characterization and analysis platforms such as high-resolution TEM electron microscopy, XPS, EMPA, SEM-EDS, GC-MS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, Raman, XRD, TG-MS, liquid scintillator, nanoindentation measurement, and material mechanical performance testing machines. The research laboratory has over half a century of research experience in the field of nuclear fuel design and preparation, and has rich research achievements in the preparation and evaluation of dispersed nuclear fuels. China has made outstanding contributions to the development of fuel elements in nuclear energy utilization, especially in the fourth generation inherently safe nuclear reactors.
