1. Research fields
Probabilistic Safety Analysis (PSA): One of the pioneer research teams in China in the research of PSA theory, technology, and application, especially for advanced reactors and innovative reactors.
Nuclear Emergency Decision Support Technology: nuclear emergency policies and regulations, advanced technology for nuclear emergency decision-making, emergency decision support system for nuclear facilities.
Radiation Protection and Environmental Protection: includes radiation protection objective and regulation, radioactive waste minimization, radiation monitoring, burnup measurement, radiation zoning, efficient radiation shielding design, and simulation methods for radiation particle transport using Monte Carlo and deterministic approaches. We also conduct research on environmental impact assessment technology for nuclear facilities.
Radioactive Source Term Analysis: research on the mechanisms of radioactive nuclide production, migration, and release in nuclear facilities, as well as computational models and tools.
2. Research projects
The division is dedicated to support the research and development of the advanced reactors designed by INET, such as HTGR, NHR and High Flux Reactors (HFRs), in the field of PSA and Radiation Protection.
The other research projects are mainly supported by the National Science and Technology Major Project,the National Key Technologies R&D Program of China, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, China National Nuclear Corporation, National Natural Science Foundation of China.
3. Laboratory and facilities
(1) Advisory Support Technical Center of National Nuclear Emergency Decision Making
The division operates the Advisory Support Technology Center of National Nuclear Emergency Decision Making since April 2015, which belongs to the national-level professional technical support center for nuclear emergencies. Several faculty members are appointed as members of international, national, and provincial/municipal nuclear emergency expert committees.
(2) Experiment Platform for Fission Products and Important Activation Products in HTGR
In recent years, several experiment facilities have been established, including the facility for HTR-10 gas fission product measurement, the experiment facility for solid fission product deposition, the facility for tritium and carbon-14 sampling measurement, etc.. These facilities has formed a comprehensive experiment platform that can be used for long-term research on the generation, migration, and release behavior of fission products and important activation products in HTGR.
(3) High Performance Computing Center
To ensure the needs of design and scientific research, a high-performance computing server cluster for modeling and simulations is equipped. The cluster is capable to operate various analysis software, including probabilistic safety analysis, nuclear emergency decision support system, nuclear accident consequence evaluation, radiation shielding design, radioactive source term analysis and inversion, and first-principles calculation.

The division publishes about 40 academic papers every year.
