Research on Localization Technology of Magnetic Bearing for High Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor

The active magnetic bearing (AMB) is the core supporting component of two key equipment of the high-temperature gas-cooled nuclear power plant, namely the main helium blower and the helium compressor of the fuel processing system. By utilizing AMBs, many problems caused by mechanical bearings, such as lubricating oil contamination, sealing systems, and bearing replacement in the primary circuit of the reactor, can be prevented. It is the preferred support solution for these two equipment.

The goal of the project is to solve the key technical problems of AMBs, which are applied in the main helium blower and the helium compressor in the modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTR). The technical requirements of HTR are considered and the achievements in the previous researches are incorporated in this project. The core technologies including engineering design, manufacturing, testing, commissioning, operation and maintaining will be developed in this project. The expected achievements is the localized active magnetic bearing product with completely independent intellectual property rights, which meets the requirements of HTR application.

Research on Active Magnetic Bearing for Main Helium Blower

The core result of this project is the research on the key technology of active magnetic bearing (AMB), and the development of the AMB system for the main helium blower suitable for HTR-PM application. According to the requirements of nuclear power plant application, various verification tests on 1MPa nitrogen circuit and 7MPa helium circuit have been completed. During the tests, many unexpected operating conditions were found, and the developed AMB system operated far beyond the designed conditions in some tests, but the AMB system did not have any major failures. In contrast, the imported bearing system has not undergone a complete circuit test. Therefore, the AMB system developed in this project is at least as good as the imported bearing system in terms of technical indicators. In terms of economic indicators, the cost can be reduced by more than 50% by applying the developed AMB. Thus this project made a good foundation for improving the economics of commercial high-temperature gas-cooled reactors.
