Pebble Flows
Pebble flow is a kind of extremely slow flow of pebbles inside the pebble bed type-high temperature reactor core. Pebble flow and heat transfer are the basis of reactor thermal hydraulics and vital to the efficiency and safety of HTGR. My research is on some fundamental issues of pebble flow and heat transfer, like the quasi-static packing structure, the bulk flow velocity and streamline, the distribution of void fractions, the resident time and stagnant ratio, the contact history and collision dynamics, the flow uniformity/flow regimes/flow patterns/flow stresses/flow resistances, the thermal radiation modeling of packed pebbles, the helium-pebble convective heat transfer, the effective thermal conductivity of the pebble bed, and etc. New modeling and numerical methods are always needed to simulate the pebble flow and thermal radiation inside the reactor core.
Multiphase/Gas-Particle Flows/Granular Flows
I am interested in many issues on multiphase flows, e.g. inter-phase interactions and mechanisms of multiphase flows, the numerical methods and schemes (Eulerian-Lagrangian simulation, hybrid scheme, CFD-DEM coupling methods), particle flow modeling and collision dynamics, and many other important issues in multiphase/particle/granular flows.
