Organizers
The WNU-THU Week 2024 will be co-hosted by the World Nuclear University (WNU), the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology (INET) of Tsinghua University (THU), and the Chinese Nuclear Society (CNS). The local organizer for this event will be the Sanmen Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (SMNPC).
WNU is a global network committed to enhancing international education and leadership in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy and the applications of nuclear science and technology. The WNU founding supporters are the IAEA, OECD/NEA, WANO and World Nuclear Association (WNA).
INET of Tsinghua University was founded in 1960. It is the largest research institute in China’s tertiary education system, with around 300 faculty members and above 400 postgraduates. INET has strong strengths in R&D of nuclear energy, nuclear fuel reprocessing, nuclear technology application, energy policy, as well as in talent cultivation.
The Chinese Nuclear Society (hereafter referred to as “CNS”) was established in 1980. It is a non-for-profit organization dedicated to nuclear science, technology and industry. Its object is to mobilize the nuclear professionals to promote the advancement and peaceful use of nuclear science and technology. The three main missions of the CNS are to conduct the academic exchange, popularize the knowledge of nuclear science and technology to the public, strengthen the communication among Chinese and overseas colleagues. CNS has more than 20,000 individual members, 237 organization members and 9 working committees, covering 49 technical divisions and connecting 23 provincial nuclear societies.
Sanmen Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as SMNPC), one of the subsidiaries of the China National Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (CNNP), is a substantial state-owned enterprise established on April 17, 2005. SMNPC is in charge of the construction, commissioning, operation and management of the Sanmen Nuclear Power Project; and takes the full responsibility of nuclear safety. Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant Phase I Project adopts the Generation III AP1000 technology featuring “passive safety systems". These systems use gravity, inertia, convection, diffusion, evaporation, condensation, and other natural forces to cool the containment building and remove reactor residual heat in order to mitigate any design basis accidents and enhance the safety of the nuclear power plant. The plan for the Sanmen Nuclear Power Project is to construct 6 units in 3 phases and each unit will have a capacity of over 1000MWe. Unit 1 of Phase I was put into commercial operation on September 21, 2018 and Unit 2 on November 5, 2018. Construction of Phase II commenced on June 28, 2022. After the completion of all six units, the total installed capacity of the Sanmen Nuclear Power Project will reach 7500 MWe, and the annual power generation will reach 60 billion kilowatts, equivalent to 60% of that of the Three Gorges.
