From July 4 to 10, the World Nuclear University (WNU) - Tsinghua Week in Conjunction with AUA-THU Overseas Study Program 2026, themed “The Global Nuclear Industry Today," was successfully held in Huludao, Liaoning Province, China. The event was jointly organized by the World Nuclear Association (WNA), the Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology (INET) of Tsinghua University (THU), and the Chinese Nuclear Society (CNS) in collaboration with the Asian Universities Alliance (AUA). Liaoning Technical University (LNTU), located in Liaoning Province, served as the host institution of this program.

During the opening ceremony, opening remarks were delivered by the attending distinguished guests: Li Weihang, Deputy Mayor of Huludao Municipality; Francois Morin, Director Asia of WNA; Gao Keli, Deputy Secretary-General of CNS; Ma Tao, Deputy Director of INET; and Rong Desheng, Vice President of LNTU. The ceremony was chaired by Professor Liu Xuegang of Tsinghua University.

This year's WNU-Tsinghua Week curriculum covered four core modules:

1. Global status and prospects of nuclear energy;

2. Latest achievements in advanced reactor research and development;

3. Nuclear fuel cycle and nuclear technology applications; and

4. Key issues and hotspots in the nuclear sector.

Complementing the academic coursework, the program incorporated a field study component, organizing technical visits to facilities such as the Xudapu Nuclear Power Plant. Additionally, the event featured a series of interactive activities, including student-moderated classroom sessions, group presentations on learning outcomes, and video competitions.

The faculty panel brought together 17 distinguished experts and scholars from across China and around the world. Among the keynote figures were Abel Gonzalez, Member of the IAEA Commission of Safety Standards (CSS) and Academician of the Argentine Academy of Environmental Sciences; Sama Leon, Director General of WNA and President of the World Nuclear University (WNU); and Huang Mingang, Chief Economist and Chief Auditor of the China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC). The roster also included senior specialists and faculty members from the China National Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. (CNNP), China Nuclear Power Engineering Co., Ltd. (CNPE), State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE), the Institute of Applied Physics and Computational Mathematics (IAPCM), Liaoning Technical University, and Tsinghua University.

The program gathered 90 participants from 27 domestic and international universities, alongside six enterprises and public institutions. In addition to Chinese attendees, the cohort included 32 international delegates representing 20 countries, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Pakistan, Ghana, Cambodia, Malawi, Malaysia, Namibia, South Africa, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Singapore, Iraq, Indonesia, Jordan, etc..

The annual World Nuclear University - Tsinghua Week was inaugurated in 2007, with this year marking the milestone 20th edition of the event. This year’s program was also supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The WNU-Tsinghua Week has consistently adhered to three core missions:

First, to disseminate knowledge of nuclear science and technology;

Second, to promote the spirit of the nuclear industry, showcase its remarkable developmental achievements, and cultivate talent for the field;

Third, to establish a platform for international exchange that fosters in-depth academic dialogue and strengthens connections between experts and young students from China and across the world.
