IAEA IEC Director visited INET

On October 17, 2024, Mr. Carlos Torres Vidal, Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) incident and Emergency Centre (IEC), visited INET. The visit was implemented as a part of the “IEC’s Trip to China”.

Prof. Jiejuan Tong welcomed the guests at the Changping campus. Professors and researchers from the Advisory Technical Support Center on National Nuclear Emergency Decision-making (ATSC-NNED), the INET’s Emergency Office, and the Division of Reactor Safety participated in this event.

The guests visited the 10MW high-temperature gas-cooled experimental reactor (HTR-10) and also the Emergency Command Center.

The visit was followed by a round-table discussion on Nuclear Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) technologies such as nuclear emergency response decision-making and inverse modeling technology of radioactivity source terms. INET is currently responsible to operate the Advisory Technical Support Center on National Nuclear Emergency Decision-making(ATSC-NNED) due to its excellent R&D capabilities and expert resources in the field of EPR. INET also has the special strength in talent training and development in comparison with other EPR R&D organisations. Tong said that INET is keen to capitalise on these strengths and to have further co-operation with IAEA in the field of EPR..

Mr. Carlos briefly explained that his expectation from the visit was to involve academic resources such as INET to support IAEA’s capability building efforts. This was his first visit to INET, and he was deeply impressed by the scientific research and capability INET has demonstrated. He is looking forward to further co-operation with INET not only in the field EPR but also in other related field.
