Chairman of Indonesian BRIN Research Organization for Nuclear Energy Visited INET

On September 23, Dr. Syaiful Bakhri, Chairman of the Nuclear Energy Research Organization at the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional - BRIN), visited the Institute of Nuclear and Energy Technology (INET) alongside his colleague, Dr. Maman Kartaman Ajiriyanto. Prof. Tong Jiejuan, INET’s Deputy Chair, extended a warm welcome on behalf of the institute and facilitated a productive exchange meeting aimed at fostering mutual understanding and exploring potential cooperation.

During the meeting, Prof. Tong provided an overview of INET, detailing its research focus, organizational structure, and significant achievements in research and development. Additionally, Tong highlighted INET’s educational strengths and its international programs for education and training.

Several INET professors presented their work, including:

·Dr. Sun Jun, Head of the Reactor Physics, Thermal Hydraulics & System Simulation Division and Executive Director of the China-Indonesia Belt & Road Joint Laboratory on HTGR, outlined the laboratory’s history, goals, and ongoing activities since the signing of the Expression of Interest with BATAN in May 2014. Dr. Sun also previewed upcoming events scheduled for late 2024.

·Prof. Xu Chao, Head of the Nuclear Chemistry and Technology Division, discussed the division’s research, which includes basic actinide chemistry, high-level liquid waste separation, nuclear chemical engineering equipment development, and hydrogen production. The core research in the division is related to nuclear fuel cycle, with aims not only to minimize radioactive waste, but also to maximize the utilization of nuclear resources. Prof. Xu expressed interest in collaborating with BRIN in the above areas.

·Dr. Chen Can, Associate Professor in the Environmental Technology Division, showcased INET’s electron beam (EB) irradiation technology for wastewater treatment, a green and innovative method that offers rapid processing and high efficiency without causing secondary pollution. Currently, INET EB technology has been widely applied in the treatment of actual industrial wastewater, including dyeing wastewater, hospital wastewater, antibiotic residue, landfill leachate, hazardous liquid, urban wastewater and pharmaceutical wastewater. Dr. Chen also summarized INET’s research on the phytoremediation for radioactive contaminated soil.

In turn, Dr. Bakhri introduced BRIN and its network of 12 research organizations, with a focus on the Nuclear Energy Research Organization’s seven centers, which span areas such as nuclear reactors, fuel cycles, materials, accelerators, safety, and technology. He outlined BRIN’s R&D programs for 2025-2029, aimed at advancing reactor energy applications, nuclear fuel cycles, and nuclear technology. Bakhri expressed his desire for closer cooperation with INET and mentioned BRIN’s upcoming scholarship program to support Indonesian students studying abroad, including at Tsinghua University.

Dr. Ajiriyanto, Acting Head of the Research Center for Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Radioactive Waste Technology, detailed his center’s R&D activities and sought collaboration with INET in areas such as liquid waste solidification, soil remediation, and fission waste reprocessing.

The BRIN delegation also toured the HTR-10 and HTR-PM testing facilities with Dr. Sun Jun.
