Division of radiation technology

Radiation technology is an environment-friendly approach for the clean-up of contaminated groundwater and industrial wastewater. Radiation technology can treat multi-component wastestreams and does not require any hazardous chemical additives nor does it create any secondary wastes. In radiation processing, g-rays transfer the energy to matter and directly cause chemical ionizations, lose some of energy, and create secondary electrons. These secondary electrons lose their energy in a cascade of scattering events creating numerous atoms and molecules in highly reactive states. In water, this process produces hydrogen radicals, hydroxyl radical, and the solvated electron, all very chemically reactive species that are free to react with each other and contaminants present in the wastewater. This process is also very effective in removing a wide range of volatile organic compounds from industrial exhausts.
The division is aiming at applying Advanced Oxidation Process by ionizing radiation for removing toxic and refractory pollutants (organic compounds) in industrial effluent and drinking water, on destroying pathogenic microorganisms in wastewater and sludge. So this process is used to real industrial effluents that are very hard to be treated by conventional methods.

The division concentrates on the research and development of application of radiation technology in environment protection, including the following fields:

  • Radiation treatment of high concentration of recalcitrant organic wastewater
  • Radiation treatment of persistent organic pollutants
  • Radiation treatment of sludge and other solid wastes

The equipment and materials irradiated by Cobalt-60 sources and electron accelerators, of the kinds used for the production of industrial products DO NOT BECOME RADIOACTIVE!

With strong support from the INET and in the face of unprecedented opportunities, we are dedicated to the environmental protection of China.

We are always anticipating collaboration with colleagues all over the world!
