Division of Water and wastewater treatment

The research activities in this division include water and wastewater treatment, environmental biotechnology, environmental microbiology, water resource management, water quality analysis, new energy research and development.
The division concentrates on the research and development in the following fields:

New biological treatment technology of wastewater

  1. Development of new aerobic and anaerobic treatment technologies
  2. New technology of nitrogen and phosphorus removal and its mechanisms
  3. Mechanism of biosorption and its application
  4. Waste water treatment by immobilized microorganisms
  5. Basic microbiological studies concerning biological treatment of waste water

Application of modern biotechnology in environmental engineering

  1. Treatment of recalcitrant organic pollutants by genetically engineered bacteria
  2. Bioremediation of heavy metal- and radionuclide- contaminated environment
  3. Monitoring of environmental microorganisms by molecular biological methods
  4. Biodegradation of recalcitrant and persistent organic pollutants (POPs)

Application of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in waste treatment

  1. Chemical and electrochemical oxidation treatment of organic wastewater
  2. Wet oxidation treatment of hazardous organic waste

Groundwater recharge and wastewater reclamation

  1. Soil aquifer treatment and artificial groundwater recharge
  2. New technology of groundwater recharge and wastewater reuse
  3. Health risk assessment of wastewater reuse
  4. Environmental simulation technology in groundwater remediation

Removal of micro-pollutants from drinking water source

  1. Removal of nitrate and pesticides from drinking water source
  2. Mechanism and technology of selective removal of trace heavy metal ions from drinking water source
  3. Technology of fluoride and arsenic removal from drinking water source
  4. Removal of organic micro-pollutants from drinking water source

Bioenergy exploitation and biohydrogen production

    • Radiation pretreatment and utilization of lignocellulose
    • Hydrogen production by organic waste water fermentation
    • Hydrogen production by cyanobacteria
