An Jigang,(J.G.AN), member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, expert in applied nuclear technology, research professor, Ph.D. supervisor, and director of the Research Group of Nuclear Technology, Institute of Nuclear and New Energy Technology, Tsinghua University, vice chairman of two of China Nuclear Society¡¯s branches, the Isotopes Branch and the Nuclear Electronics & Detection Technology Branch.

Being the main scientist to initiate the gas-pressurized ion-chamber detector domain in China, he has made many contributions in the fields of nuclear reactor neutron detectors and radiation instruments. From 1985 through 1987, he devoted himself to the research of performance and mechanism of ¡°Self-Quenching Streamer Chamber¡± at Enrico Fermi Institute (University of Chicago) and obtained important experimental achievements. His studies were broad enough to significantly modify many commonly believed but incorrect notions about these detectors. Since 1990, he has been working mainly on the research and development of the container (large object) radiography inspection system. He had invented special ion-chamber array detector and had researched and constructed the first linear accelerator container inspection system in China before 1996. His invention on Cobalt-60 container inspection system has been commercialized since 1999. Many Cobalt-60 systems have been equipped at Chinese Customs and some others exported. His latest research work is on invention and construction of Cobalt-60 container CT system, which possesses ability of material determination by section image and can offer projection image along different directions to heighten the performance to a new level. This equipment is very useful for the fight against terrorism and for the social security.

He has won many important prizes, including a Second Class Prize for National Technique Invention, two First Class Prizes for Science and Technology Progress from Beijing Municipal Government and the Ministry of Education.
As an author of three monographs and 70 published papers, he holds above 12 patents, both at home and overseas.
